Torrefied Biochar and Coal from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)

At SAMKITEC, we leverage advanced torrefaction technology to convert agricultural residues and municipal solid waste (MSW) into torrefied biochar or coal, providing a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels. This innovative process addresses the dual challenges of waste management and energy production in a sustainable manner.

Why Torrefaction?

India generates approximately 500 million tons of agricultural and biomass waste alongside 65 million tons of MSW annually. Traditional disposal methods often involve open burning, which contributes significantly to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. By utilizing torrefaction, we can transform this waste into a valuable resource, mitigating environmental impacts while generating energy.

The Torrefaction Process

Torrefaction is a thermochemical treatment that involves heating biomass at temperatures between 200°C and 300°C in an oxygen-free environment. This process removes moisture and volatile compounds, resulting in a solid product with a higher carbon content, greater energy density, and improved hydrophobicity. The end product resembles coal, making it suitable for various applications, including co-firing in power plants and use in industrial processes.
